The Story
The Westcoast Shirt is a 50's style open collar overshirt. JELADO reproduced the print design from their vintage archive.
The process of manufacturing this shirt is complex and requires a few back and forth into multiple factories to achieve this look and feel: the rayon twill is woven at a factory in Senshu and the fabric then dyed at a factory in Kyoto. Finally, it is moved to the printing factory, and finished with discharge printing.
The printing method is called ground dyeing pigment discharge printing, and after dyeing the original fabric, the base color of the pattern is removed while the pigment color is applied to the pattern. Since the original fabric is dyed, the color penetrates to the lining, giving you a luxurious feel.
The number of factories in Japan that can perform pigment discharge printing on 145-width rayon fabric is decreasing, making it a very rare and valuable fabric.
