The Story
The first American down jacket manufactured in the 1930s. This is the earliest model of the most popular short type. The collar is minimalist, and the lining of the sleeves is lined with flannel without down. In addition, the detail with elastic ribs on the waist to prevent slipping indicates that it was worn as a set with pants at the time. This type of down jacket is the same as the one on display at the Industrial Museum in Seattle, proving that this down jacket established its style early on and is a universal presence that has continued to support the outdoors of the Northwest.
Here is the extract of the description found at Seattle MOHAI:
Skyliner down jacket (Eddie Bauer, 1936). During an excursion on the Olympic Peninsula in 1935, local outdoorsman and retailer Eddie Bauer’s wool garments became soaked with freezing rain and he started to experience serious signs of hypothermia.
After his near-death experience, Bauer set out to make a better coat for cold weather activities, one that would be lighter and warmer and allow for good air circulation. Bauer’s design was a game changer and something new for the US outdoor industry. His puffy down coat used quilting to keep its thickness even throughout.
This artifact is the earliest known surviving down jacket made by Eddie Bauer.
